In the current political climate it is crucial that young people feel not only safe, but supported in their schools. This is why Solutions Not Suspensions, a campaign to end discipline disparities in schools, participates in the national coalition Dignity in Schools Campaign.
Dignity in Schools (DSC) seeks to challenge the systemic problem of pushout in our nation’s schools and works to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline. School pushout occurs due to numerous factors that prevent or discourage young people from remaining on track to complete their education.
October 21 through 28 Dignity in Schools will host the Week of Action, which includes numerous events in Minnesota throughout the month of October. Tuesday, October 17, is the Solutions not Suspensions meeting, and caucus meetings and coalition time will on the agenda.
About Solutions Not Suspensions
Locally, Solutions Not Suspensions Coalition includes multiple organizations, ranging from advocates to students to teachers to attorneys.Though Minnesota is a great state in which to raise kids, we also have some of the biggest gaps educationally.
Our students deserve better. Think about a young person in your life you care about. Perhaps your child, a neighbor or a niece. You want what’s best for them, right? To have all of the opportunity in the world, to have boundless possibilities. We should want that same thing for every child. As they say, “it takes a village.” There is no my kid or your kid; they’re our kids.
Not only is it the right thing to do to keep students in school—it’s the law. The Minnesota State Constitution [Article 3, Section 1] guarantees a free, public education for every single student.
What can you do?
Check out this calendar of Minnesota events happening in the next two weeks. Help us spread the word and influence policy to make sure all of our young people are not only in the classroom learning, but are safe and supported. Will you join us?
